Two Papers Shut Down Printing Operations

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO—The Colorado Springs Gazette will be transferring its printing operations to the facility of The Denver Post, with the printing to begin there around April 15. The phaseout of printing in Colorado Springs will result in the eventual elimination of 51 full- and part-time positions in the press and production area, The Denver Post reported.

The Gazette had been facing a decision as to whether it should spend millions of dollars on a new press—its current machine is 32 years old—while continuing to operate in an outdated facility, according to the Post. The press operated only three to four hours per day.

Elsewhere, another newspaper publisher, American Consolidated Media in Hibbing, MN, is farming out its printing operations to Forum Communications' new production facility in Duluth, MN, beginning April 1. More than 50 jobs will be lost with the switch, though an unspecified number of positions will be available to them at the Duluth facility.

American Consolidated Media publishes four newspapers and a shopper. Forum is the parent of the Duluth News Tribune.
