July 31, was a bittersweet day in the in-plant community as four long-time in-plant managers said farewell to the industry they love and started their next chapters as retirees. Bidding adieu yesterday were:
-
Judy Bankson, associate director at Oregon State University’s in-plant. She worked in the printing business for more than 48 years, spending most of that time at in-plants.
-
Roland Falana, general manager at Duke University, who retired after 26 years of service. This was his second career, having also retired from the US Marine Corps in 1992. Listen to his reflections on his career in this podcast (starting at 2:57).
-
Laura Lockett, director of Sacramento State’s in-plant, where she served for nearly 40 years, starting out as a secretary and working her way up. Read about her career in this 2019 IPI profile.
-
Doug Maxwell, director of Brigham Young University’s in-plant. He served as director since 2004, but began working part-time at the in-plant when he was still a BYU student, running the small offset presses. He was voted "Overall Contributing Attendee" at this year’s Inkjet Summit. Watch IPI’s final interview with Doug here, and read about his career in this 2010 IPI profile.
In their farewell messages to in-plant peers, they reflected fondly on their time in the industry.
“This is the best group of folks I have ever met,” wrote Judy Bankson. “I have made many great friends and learned so much from you.”
“It’s been an honor to have met so many of you at ACUP and IPMA conferences and to have brainstormed through print and mail issues over the years,” echoed Laura Lockett.
“I've made some good friends over the years while attending conferences,” wrote Roland Falana. “I will miss everyone.”
And we will miss all of you. Best of luck, friends, and enjoy retirement.
