In-plants continue to thrive in North America. Some even rival commercial printers in size. To get a better understanding of the largest in-house printing operations, we reached out to them and ranked them according to full-time employees and annual sales.
Some changes that stand out in the 2022 rankings:
- Nine of the top 10 revenue-generating in-plants are government printers.
- 26 in-plants on our list have increased the size of their staffs since 2021.
- Higher-ed in-plants make up more than 45% of the largest in-plants ranked by employees.
We have also analyzed trends at the largest in-plants and included data on revenue growth, services provided, labor challenges, the growth of wide-format signage, equipment upgrade plans, and more.

Bob has served as editor of In-plant Impressions since October of 1994. Prior to that he served for three years as managing editor of Printing Impressions, a commercial printing publication. Mr. Neubauer is very active in the U.S. in-plant industry. He attends all the major in-plant conferences and has visited more than 180 in-plant operations around the world. He has given presentations to numerous in-plant groups in the U.S., Canada and Australia, including the Association of College and University Printers and the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. He also coordinates the annual In-Print contest, co-sponsored by IPMA and In-plant Impressions.
