In-Print Winners Selected
As usual, the judging of In-Print 2009 last month was a rigorous task. Still, despite earning crossed eyes from looking through loupes all day, the six judges managed to select 76 winners out of a sea of excellent entries.
The judging of the only printing contest for in-plants took place again in the Salt Lake City offices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Printing Division. LDS staff members Karen Pixton and Cindy Astill spent months sorting and cataloging the submissions and were on hand to record the winners. A drop in entries this year to about 420 helped the judges finish their labors in record time. In the end, they awarded 34 Gold Awards, 27 Silver and 15 Bronze.
Among the big winners again this year were the University of Oklahoma, which claimed 11 awards, and the University of North Texas, which earned 10. Brigham Young University won seven awards, the LDS Church Printing Division, Texas Tech and the University of Missouri-Columbia each won six awards, and the University of Delaware came away with five.
The judges this year were:
• Rob Lingard, Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators/IPMA Awards Chairman
• Ron Anderson, Weber State University
• Larry Clements, Redlands Community College
• Dale Smith, Utah State University
• Chris Anderson, Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators
• Terry Johnson, Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators
A cohesive, meticulous group, the judges discussed the merits and flaws of each piece, checking entry forms for additional information and giving careful thought to each decision. Minor flaws ended the chances of some otherwise excellent pieces, said judge Larry Clements, and digitally printed entries were more competitive than ever.
“We saw unique coating done on some of the digital pieces that made them stand out from the others,” he said. “As more entries move toward digital presses and the latest techniques, I can see our jobs as judges getting much more difficult.”
The winners (see a full list by company name or by category) will be honored at an awards ceremony on June 10 in Rochester, N.Y., the final day of the IPMA conference. They will receive elegant plaques featuring a photo of the winning piece.
As for the Best of Show winner, that secret won’t be revealed until the awards ceremony. And it will be a surprise.
