More than 40 people traveled to Niagara Falls for the College and University Print Management Association of Canada (CUPMAC) conference in June.

Ray Chambers, CGCM, MBA, has invested over 30 years managing and directing printing plants, copy centers, mail centers and award-winning document management facilities in higher education and government.
Most recently, Chambers served as vice president and chief information officer at Juniata College. Chambers is currently a doctoral candidate studying Higher Education Administration at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU). His research interests include outsourcing in higher education and its impact on support services in higher education and managing support services. He also consults (Chambers Management Group) with leaders in both the public and private sectors to help them understand and improve in-plant printing and document services operations.
During the Winter Olympics in February, Simon Fraser University Document Solutions, in Burnaby, British Columbia, successfully produced a daily 12-page color newsletter detailing the progress of the German Olympics team. The 15-employee in-plant used its Xerox iGen3 to produce 1,600 newsletters a day for 16 days, binding them on its C.P. Bourg BME booklet maker. Digital files were sent from Germany using the in-plant’s WebCRD job submission system, from Rochester Software Associates.
Printing Services at the University of Victoria, in British Columbia, is keeping a lot more printing in-house these days thanks to the recent installation of a Presstek 34DI press. “We looked at what was being outsourced, and the Presstek DI press was the best match to bring that work back in house,” says Manager Peter Klit. “We have been able to keep a great deal more printing work on campus.”
IN-PLANT MANAGERS from 19 states and Canada gathered last month at the historic Stockyards in Fort Worth, Texas, for the combined Southeastern University Printing and Digital Managers Conference (SUPDMC) and Texas Association of College and University Printers (TACUP) conference. While billed as a regional conference, the event’s theme, “Making the Tough Decisions,” attracted representatives from as far away as California, Colorado and British Columbia. The conference was organized and hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Print and Mail department, led by Director Steve Burdette and Assistant Director Mary R. Burdette.
