Bob has served as editor of In-plant Impressions since October of 1994. Prior to that he served for three years as managing editor of Printing Impressions, a commercial printing publication. Mr. Neubauer is very active in the U.S. in-plant industry. He attends all the major in-plant conferences and has visited more than 170 in-plant operations around the world. He has given presentations to numerous in-plant groups in the U.S., Canada and Australia, including the Association of College and University Printers and the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. He also coordinates the annual In-Print contest, co-sponsored by IPMA and In-plant Impressions.

Just as we were finalizing this issue, Hurricane Sandy slammed into our area. The storm closed down Philadelphia for two days, including IPG's offices, and brought major damage to the surrounding areas.

Avanti Computer Systems held its 19th annual user’s conference in Washington, D.C., in June, bringing together a mix of both in-plant and commercial printers. During the three-day event, attendees networked with their peers, swapped ideas and attended numerous sessions on industry topics.

Sun Chemical has acquired certain assets and liabilities of Handschy inks, coatings and varnishes business, from its parent company, Graphic Packaging International, Inc. Handschy’s customer lists, formulations and trademarks will be included in the acquisition.

At its annual meeting last night, the Graphic Arts Association (GAA) celebrated 120 years of service to the printing industry in Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware. GAA honored two of its founding member companies: George H. Buchanan Co. and National Publishing Co. for their years of dedication and commitment to the industry. The event was held at The Old Original Bookbinders in Philadelphia with two guest speakers. Henry Freedman spoke on the topic “Changing Times.” He covered the critical issues of the future of our industry. Janet Green, the first female chairperson of the board of PIA/GATF also addressed the group.

Yesterday’s mail piece automation and verification demonstration in Baltimore marked the first of six such events being presented by Buhrs and Lake Image Systems. The two companies are holding a six-city, cross country tour to demonstrate how mail piece processing, verification and job tracking solutions will reduce labor costs, improve productivity and reduce liability exposure. The next show in the series will take place this coming Thursday in Atlanta (3/13), and then continue in Dallas (3/27), Los Angeles (4/3), Chicago (4/10) and New York/New Jersey (4/17). The copier in the Camden County Clerk’s Office is a cash cow no more. After charging citizens $1 per page to use the self-service copier in its office to duplicate public documents, the clerk’s office was ordered by the New Jersey courts to slash its rates to just 5 cents a copy—and refund nearly $1 million to taxpayers. The ruling, as reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer, came about after a local contractor sued Camden and Burlington counties for price gouging. (Burlington was charging 50 cents.) The suit contended the counties had a captive audience, since taxpayers weren’t permitted to copy the documents elsewhere. Now
