A popular choice by in-plants seeking print management information systems (MIS), Toronto-based Avanti Computer Systems has long stood out as one of the few remaining print MIS vendors not acquired by EFI. With EFI’s May acquisition of privately held printLEADER, the company now controls about 70 percent of the Print MIS market, according to EFI’s own data.

Maybe Wayne Guiney should have been a politician. At least that's what some people have said to him, because his people skills have kept the staffs he's managed at multiple in-plants on his side.

Wayne Guiney, manager of Office Services at Toronto’s Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG), made the decision to turn his in-plant into a full digital shop in 2004. He replaced a mix of offset equipment with a pair of Xerox Nuveras, a DocuColor 5252 and two FreeFlow scanning units.

Specialty packaging and printing paper producer Fraser Papers has sought out bankruptcy protection in the United States and Canada. Fraser and its subsidiaries have initiated a court-supervised restructuring under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act in Canada and will be seek similar relief under Chapter 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Fraser will continue its routine business operations.

Generally speaking, Chapter 15 helps sort out bankruptcy cases that involve parties (debtors, assets, claimants, etc.) from more than one country. Fraser is based in Toronto.

WWF-Canada, a leading conservation organization, and Domtar have inked an ambitious agreement that solidifies their joint commitment to ensuring the long-term conservation of the Canadian boreal forest. While some feel that adding equipment is the best way to strengthen their in-plants, Wayne Guiney, executive manager of Office Services at Ontario Power Generation, in Toronto, offers the following viewpoint: “When we streamline our in-plants, much thought should go into how much space we are occupying of the companies core resource space. The trimmer our ship, the less water we displace, and the captains of industry that manage our sales are less likely to toss us overboard to the outsourcing sharks. “Basically, the analogy here is that we all can’t go out and purchase more equipment to satisfy the back end of our business.
