Bob has served as editor of In-plant Impressions since October of 1994. Prior to that he served for three years as managing editor of Printing Impressions, a commercial printing publication. Mr. Neubauer is very active in the U.S. in-plant industry. He attends all the major in-plant conferences and has visited more than 170 in-plant operations around the world. He has given presentations to numerous in-plant groups in the U.S., Canada and Australia, including the Association of College and University Printers and the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association. He also coordinates the annual In-Print contest, co-sponsored by IPMA and In-plant Impressions.

Inspecting more than 480 printed pieces over the course of a single day is an exhausting experience. Nevertheless, the judges of the In-Print 2013 contest managed to do just that on March 11, when they gathered at IPMA headquarters in Kearney, Mo., just outside of Kansas City. As a result of their efforts, 34 different in-plants will be a whole lot happier when they learn they won awards in the only national printing contest exclusively for in-plants.

The Washington State Department of Printing (PRT) has had a tough year, with some members of the state senate pushing for its closure. A recent victory for the in-plant, however, is sure to make some of those pro-outsourcing senators squirm. The Department of Printing won the 2011 IPMA Management Award, which recognizes an outstanding in-house publishing department for its team effort in support services to the organization.

On March 14, the judges of the In-Print 2011 contest examined more than 400 printed pieces and picked 75 winners. Here they are.

A partnership between Brigham Young University and Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators has resulted in both in-plants installing seven-color HP Indigo 7000 digital color presses. What’s more, a pooled click charge arrangement has reduced costs for each.

THE PRIMARY PRO of purchasing a pre-owned offset press is, indisputably, price. Savings can be tremendous, “half or more compared to the cost of a new press,” according to NAPL’s Ray Prince. Sometimes pre-owned is the only option, especially for an in-plant with limited financial resources.

As if awards for printing weren’t enough, the In-plant Printing and Mailing Association ventured into a whole new media category this year: video. Its new Vision Awards highlighted self-promotional videos made by in-plants to publicize their shops’ capabilities. Fellow managers screened and judged the entries, and gold statues, reminiscent of the Oscars, were handed out during the awards banquet. The winners: • Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrators - Funniest Video (Who knew coffee could launch an entire staff into overdrive?) - Best Actor (Chris Anderson has proven himself master of the bulging eyes look.) • Colorado Springs School District - Best Self Promotion (What
