In-plant's Screen Printing Operation Makes the News
Kyrene School District's in-house print shop got some positive news coverage from azcentral.com on Monday in a story that highlights the 10-employee shop's newest addition: a screen-printing shop.
"We knew that just by putting this equipment in here and printing our own PE uniforms, we'd break even," remarks Printing Services Program Manager Kris Cuyler, who says that in January, the department used about $20,000 of its profits to purchase the equipment. Since then, it has been producing T-shirts and other clothing, as well as posters and banners for the Tempe, Ariz., school district and other districts.
Though in-plant employees can reportedly crank out about 300 shirts an hour using the current equipment, Cuyler says that's not enough. So the shop will purchase new, more efficient equipment in the next three to four weeks, the article says. The screen-printing shop is scheduled to produce the physical education uniforms for three school districts this summer.
This isn't all the in-plant handles, notes the story. Printing fliers and postcards that districts mail out to attract students is now a significant part of its work. Printing Services brings in about $100,000 a year. Read the full story here.
