The Print and Graphic Scholarship Foundation (PGSF) has received the full publishing rights and intellectual property to Introduction to Graphic Communication, the widely used textbook coauthored by the late Cal Poly Professor Emeritus Harvey Levenson and industry leader John Parsons, former Editorial Director of The Seybold Report and Principal of IntuIdeas. Created to fill a gap in introductory curriculum, the book has grown into one of the most widely adopted resources in graphic communications education.
Originally published by PIA/GATF in 2007, the book was rewritten and reimagined in 2018 as the field’s first interactive printed textbook—pairing core concepts with videos and digital learning tools. Today, over 5,000 copies have been distributed, and the book has been adopted by over 25 high schools, technical schools, and two- and four-year colleges and universities.
With Levenson’s passing last summer and the growing demands of Parsons’ ghostwriting practice, the coauthors sought a trusted organization to carry the book forward. They chose PGSF for its long-standing commitment to education, workforce development, and industry partnerships.
“I was deeply honored to help Professor Levenson turn his original book into the resource it is today,” Parsons said. “I am thrilled and confident that PGSF will continue to enhance and improve this singular guide to our fascinating and ever-evolving profession.”
All proceeds from Introduction to Graphic Communication support PGSF scholarships and grants, helping students pursue education and careers in print and graphic communications. PGSF will continue to revise the book through the many industry experts who have offered to contribute to the book and its ongoing success. Expanding and updating the content, both printed and digital, ensures its ongoing relevance and value. Print remains a vital and rapidly evolving industry, and PGSF is proud to support the education and development of those entering — and advancing within — the field.
“Harvey Levenson dedicated his career to preparing students for real-world success in graphic communications. It’s an honor to carry his legacy forward by stewarding this book and using its impact to support students with scholarships, fund schools through grants, and enhance academic programs.,” said Charlotte Tueckmantel, Director of Operations, PGSF. “This gift strengthens both education and the future of our industry.”
