Fifty years after the release of the Warren Commission Report, the Government Printing Office (GPO) has digitized the entire report and made it available on the GPO’s Federal Digital System (FDsys). President Lyndon Johnson assembled the Warren Commission, which was chaired by Chief Justice Earl Warren, to investigate John F. Kennedy’s assassination. GPO, the nation’s largest in-plant, worked in conjunction with the Boston Public Library to digitize the hearing volumes after the Warren Commission report was digitized last year.
The Warren Commission Report and the 26 hearing volumes were first produced in 1964. Prior to the digitization, the materials were available through distribution to Federal depository libraries through the GPO’s bookstores. Approximately 235,000 copies of the report and 5,600 sets of the hearings were produced.
“GPO is committed to digitization efforts and providing future generations of Americans with digital access to historical content,” proclaims Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks. “I thank Boston Public Library for collaborating with GPO to digitize the hearing volumes. This digitization effort reflects GPO’s digital transformation from printing the report 50 years ago to making them digitally available today.”
