Tomorrow, the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO), will open its doors to host the first In-plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA) Road Show of the year in its Washington, D.C., headquarters. This will be a full day mini-conference with educational sessions, networking, and an exclusive tour of GPO, the country’s largest in-plant.
One highlight of the day will be an in-depth industry outlook by Lisa Cross, principal analyst with Alliance Research, part of PRINTING United Alliance, in which she will discuss in-plant trends in inkjet, wide-format, and artificial intelligence.
Also on the docket, Katelin Shanks of Racami will highlight 10 red flags every print shop should catch when choosing a software vendor; Bryan Matlock of Ricoh will discuss how innovation drives success; and Jay Kroll of General Formulations will delve into substrates beyond just paper. GPO Director Hugh Nathaniel Halpern will also be on hand to welcome attendees.
In addition to the sessions, attendees can browse a vendor exhibit area featuring more than a dozen suppliers, offering technologies to help in-plants stay competitive. Both IPMA Director Mike Loyd and IPI Editor Bob Neubauer will be on hand, and there will be ample time to network with them and numerous in-plant managers during the event.
Exclusive Tour of the GPO In-plant
The highlight of the day will be an afternoon tour of the GPO, the largest and most advanced in-plant in the country. Attendees will see firsthand how GPO has transformed its operations by shifting from offset to inkjet printing.
In 2019, GPO installed four Canon ColorStream 6900 inkjet presses and a Canon VarioPrint i200 cut-sheet inkjet press, replacing six Hantscho web offset presses. Today, these systems produce critical government publications such as the Congressional Record and Federal Register.
Visitors will also experience GPO’s state-of-the-art finishing lines powered by Standard Hunkeler/Horizon technology, which provide near touch-free automation. From unwinding and folding to trimming and binding, these systems enable GPO to produce about 20,000 books per month — along with saddle-stitched booklets created directly from roll-fed paper.
In addition, attendees will see GPO’s new eight-color Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 X LED UV offset press, which has further expanded its printing capabilities.
IPMA has several other Road Shows planned for 2026 and will release dates and locations soon.
