Sustainability, better printing capabilities, and application-specific options define the rigid media market.
The hallmark of rigid media may be its firm and unbending nature, but the market itself is showing a great deal of flexibility. Led by the twin drivers of sustainability and function, the range, quality, and printability of rigid media is improving.
“Rigid media is no longer just foamboard, PVC, acrylic, and corrugated,” says Michael Barrett, enterprise business leader, and Ryan Baxter, director of Innovation & Design at Gilman Brothers, a manufacturer of foamboard products. “The category has expanded into more sustainable and more application-specific materials. Printers have more options to match the right substrate to the right job based on print quality, durability, weight, finishing, sustainability, and cost.”
Barrett and Baxter emphasize that print shops should move past thinking of rigid media as only a commodity. “The substrate can affect print quality, production speed, finishing, shipping cost, installation, sustainability, and the customer’s final impression of the job,” they say. “For printers, the opportunity is to move beyond simply asking, ‘What is the cheapest board?’ and instead ask, ‘What material delivers the best result for this application?’”
Signs of Sustainability
The range of available rigid media has grown significantly and now encompasses everything from lightweight composites and sustainable materials to specialty substrates. Rigid media types include foamboard, PVC, acrylic, glass, wood, metal, stone, aluminum composite, corrugated plastic, paper-based boards, honeycomb boards, and more.
One of the biggest areas of development has been in sustainable options.
“The push toward sustainable media is primarily driven by corporate environmental goals, stricter government regulations, and growing consumer demand for eco-responsible brands, says Kurt Kahmke, president of Payler Signs & Graphics, LLC, a wholesale sign manufacturing and grand-format printing company based in Missouri.
Consumers like millennials and Gen Z are especially driving the sustainability demand. “Younger generations often have a value-driven connection to brands and are more likely to support and promote companies that reflect their personal ethics, particularly around sustainability and social impact,” Barrett and Baxter explain.

According to Rowan Maher, CMO at Xanita, a manufacturer of sustainable fiberboard solutions, the specification-led sectors like healthcare, education, and government are also creating demand for sustainable options, “[They are] increasingly mandating FSC-certified and recyclable substrates at procurement level, which opens a valuable channel for printers with the right credentials.”
Sustainable options now include foamless foamcore, honeycomb boards, recycled aluminum composite materials, non-PVC plastics like polypropylene, 100% recyclable paper-based rigid boards, and boards made from renewable or recycled fiber.
“We're seeing the biggest growth in lightweight composite panels, PVC-free and recycled-content boards, premium acrylics, and engineered materials for retail displays, interior decor, and architectural signage,” Kahmke says. “Customers want materials that are durable, lightweight, and more sustainable.”
“Paper and fiber composites that match or exceed PVC and foam board in performance [have] gone from niche to mainstream surprisingly quickly,” Maher says. “ACM and Dibond still hold their ground for long-life outdoor work, but for the retail and events market — short-to-medium life, indoor — sustainable fiberboards are where the momentum is.
“The old quality-versus-sustainability trade-off? It's a myth,” Maher says. “Modern fiberboards like Xanita deliver full commercial print quality on both sides across UV and latex, no vinyl overlay required. That argument simply doesn't hold water anymore.”
And the momentum is not slowing down any time soon, “Simply put, the default is changing,” Maher says. “PVC-based rigid substrates are on their way out, pushed by brand sustainability commitments, retailer pressure, and tightening regulation. If you don't yet have a credible eco-friendly rigid substrate in your offering, you're already behind the curve, and your customers are probably already asking about it.”
Printing Capabilities
Improved printing capabilities are also driving innovation in rigid media. “Manufacturers are developing lighter, stronger, and more sustainable rigid media that perform better while reducing shipping costs and environmental impact,” Kahmke says.
According to Barrett and Baxter, customers are demanding materials that help printed graphics stand out, offer better visual quality, improved surface consistency, more dimensional stability, and easier fabrication and installation, “Customers increasingly want durable, premium-looking materials that deliver the appearance of permanence at a temporary price point.”
As today’s flatbed printers offer faster speeds, higher resolutions, more precision, and increased automation, it’s become paramount that boards are as smooth and flat as possible. “Consistency matters more than ever — on an automated line, variable, or unpredictable media is the enemy of throughput,” Maher says.
Barrett & Baxter agree. “Any surface defect, bowing, or inconsistency can affect ink laydown, color consistency, registration, and finishing,” they say. “Surface quality has improved through better raw materials, tighter manufacturing controls, better coatings, and more consistent board construction.”

The good news is that the industry has largely solved bowing and warping through better core engineering. Maher gives an example of Xanita’s closed-cell core, which distributes stress evenly across the board.
Strides have also been made toward combating the effects of humidity and high temperatures on boards through moisture control, manufacturing tolerances, enhanced packaging, and better storage recommendations. “While no rigid material is completely immune to heat or humidity, today's premium substrates are far more stable and consistent than they were just a few years ago,” said Kahmke says.
Maher says very thin or irregularly sized boards can still pose challenges, “Where problems do still crop up is with thin foam board in hot print environments, and with asymmetrically constructed boards that have different materials on each face.”
Kahmke has also seen improvements in the consistency of white points from batch to batch, “Manufacturers are placing more emphasis than ever on white point consistency, resulting in better color matching, more predictable output, and improved print quality across repeat jobs.”
Ink adhesion is also better, with the industry moving away from post-manufacture, pre-print treatments in favor of printability right out of the box. “What printers want today is direct printability — load it and print it, no separate priming steps — across both UV and latex inks,” Maher says.
To accommodate this, manufacturers are adding stable surface chemistries during production of the boards. “Today's rigid substrates use advanced factory coatings that boost surface energy for maximum ink adhesion and perfect droplet control. These improved treatments are universally engineered for almost all major ink sets, except for a select few specialized technologies,” Kahmke says. “Simultaneously, the introduction of universally compatible, high-adhesion ink sets is eliminating the need for specialized, material-specific primers on hard substrates.”
An Application-Specific Approach
The application now dictates the material selection, with many boards being created with specific applications in mind. Rigid media still dominates POP displays, event signage, and wayfinding, but there’s been a real shift toward experiential interior environments.
“Experiential marketing, architectural interiors, and immersive retail environments are driving massive new demand by using rigid substrates to create physical brand experiences rather than just temporary promotional signs,” Kahmke says. “Brands are now using premium acrylics, heavy-duty composite panels, and dimensional textures to build permanent wall murals, structural room dividers, and interactive retail pop-ups that blend seamlessly into modern architecture.”
Maher says rigid boards and physical graphics “create immersive, tactile experiences that stick.” “In those applications, creative value increasingly drives substrate selection, which favors boards that can be directly printed, CNC-cut into 3D structures, and responsibly disposed of post-use,” he says.
Looking Ahead
With so much innovation already happening in rigid media, what could the future hold?
Barrett and Baxter of Gilman Brothers believe we’ll see even more progress. “Rigid media will likely become more specialized, more sustainable, and more aligned with printer technology,” they say. “Printers will want fewer problems, faster throughput, better surface consistency, lighter weight, easier finishing, and clearer sustainability stories.”
Maher thinks direct printing capabilities will become “table stakes,” and Kahmke sees automation having a big influence on where the media goes next. “We will see media engineered specifically for automation, featuring ultra-thin, highly stable profiles optimized for robotic handling and print-to-cut systems,” Kahmke says.
Sustainability will also remain key to the market. “Sustainable materials become the default, not the premium option — that shift is already underway,” Maher says. “The market bifurcates more clearly: high-durability materials for long-life outdoor use on one side, lightweight printable recyclable fiberboards dominating short-to-medium-life indoor and retail on the other.
“And structural 3D applications — boards CNC-routed into architectural display elements — grow significantly as brands look for retail environments that are distinctive without the cost of traditional shopfitting.”
