McMaster University In-plant Honored for Sustainability
McMaster University's Media Production Services (MPS), the 21-employee in-plant serving the Hamilton, Ontario-based university, has earned national recognition in Canada for its innovative sustainability efforts, most notably the adoption of Sugar Sheet, an eco-friendly paper made entirely from recycled sugar cane fibers. Rolled out across all student-facing photocopiers in early 2024, this initiative began as a quiet pilot project led by MPS Director Phil Poelmans and quickly expanded campus-wide after proving its reliability and cost parity with standard paper.
MPS, which ranked 23rd on In-plant Impressions’ list of the 25 largest university in-plants in North America, received a Quality & Productivity Award from the Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO). Representatives accepted the award on June 11 in Edmonton, during CAUBO’s annual conference.
The move to eco-friendly paper complements MPS’s broader green strategy, which already includes energy-efficient technology and plant-based toners, and aligns with McMaster’s sustainability goals. Read the full story here.
