Print Associations Launch Pro-print Campaigns
“Many people think that by forgoing printing they are ‘saving trees,’” says Bob Lindgren, President of Printing Industries Association, Inc. of Southern California (PIASC). “However, the exact opposite is true."
To combat this misconception, PIASC is launching its “Choose Print” campaign on January 17. The group plans to present the facts about the value and power of print, a recyclable, renewable and sustainable environmental choice.
In the same vein, the Printing & Graphics Association MidAtlantic (PGAMA) has also come up with an educational campaign to show that print on paper actually helps to grow trees and keep our forests from being sold for development.
"The majority of fibers used to produce paper come from woodchips, sawmill scraps and recycled paper," continues Lindgren, of PIASC. "The rest comes from trees grown in sustainable forests—essentially ‘tree farms’ that grow trees as a crop, like corn or potatoes. The demand for print actually gives landowners a strong financial incentive to plant more trees rather than sell their land for development.”
Printed paper is taking a lot of the blame in the public’s mind for deforestation, adds PGAMA. We are told to “Think before you print” in order to save trees. But in fact, the site says, "Printed paper is made from a renewable resource. Trees can be replanted in places where they were harvested and also in places where they don’t currently grow."
