Temp Job Launches Career
January 1, 2009

MARGARET KLING began her career in the printing industry rather unexpectedly three decades ago. “I had a week-old baby at home,” recalls Kling, “and my sister-in-law wanted me to help out for two weeks, part time...[type]setting some name badges.” Glad to lend a hand, the self-described “stay-at-home mom” took the temp job at First Capital Printing, in St. Louis. There she made a discovery: she had a knack for typesetting.

Graph Expo Outperforms Expectations
November 1, 2008

GRAPH EXPO took over Chicago for four days last month, bringing the best of Drupa to U.S. soil. Thousands of printers turned out to see what the 600+ vendors had to show. They saw several striking changes from years past. For one thing, offset presses were not a dominant sight. Wide-open floor space typified the booths of many offset vendors. Even Heidelberg had just one press on hand, focusing instead on using Prinect to fully integrate a print shop. manroland showed no presses, but highlighted its service contract portfolios. This contrasted sharply with the booths of digital press manufacturers, which crammed as many

Drupa Demonstrates Bindery’s Crucial Role
July 1, 2008

THOUGH MOST of the press conferences and “big news” at Drupa centered on digital printing, innovations in bindery and finishing were no less prevalent. In fact, many of them sprang from the very digital printing trends that overshadowed them. As digital printing speeds have increased, bindery equipment has also gotten faster, with vastly improved automation and simplified touch-screen controls to make them even easier to set up. JDF compatibility is becoming more common in bindery equipment, allowing devices to be preset using production data. Demands for higher-quality printed products have led bindery vendors to improve their paper-handling techniques. Folds look better on the latest

GBC Enters Guinness Book for Laminating Feat
June 20, 2008

Laminating equipment specialist GBC achieved a new Guinness World Record at Drupa on June 2 by establishing the fastest time to laminate 100 square meters of paper. The GBC team was able to laminate 102.2 square meters of paper in 40.53 seconds at its stand in Hall 11. The new GBC 8500HS Cyclone laminating system and GBC High Bonding Strength (HBS) film, both of which launched at Drupa, were put to the test in the laminating challenge. Gareth Deaves, an adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records, confirmed the time of the lamination run and presented an award to the GBC team.

In-plant Roundtable at On Demand
April 1, 2008

At the On Demand show last month in Boston, In-plant Graphics organized a roundtable luncheon for in-plant managers. Hosted by GBC, the luncheon meeting lured more than 25 in-plant managers away from the busy show floor. They came from a diverse collection of organizations, such as Portland General Electric, Principal Financial Group, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Securian Financial, Allstate Insurance, Brown University and the University of Missouri-Columbia, to name a few. IPG Editor Bob Neubauer moderated the discussion, which covered in-plants’ equipment acquisition plans and new services they have added. Among the new services that attendees said helped strengthen their in-plants was

New IPG Video Shows In-plant Roundtable
March 21, 2008

More than two dozen in-plant managers attended a recent IPG roundtable discussion at the On Demand show. A new video on the IPG Web site provides a glimpse of that lunch meeting, which attracted a diverse collection of in-plants from organizations like Portland General Electric, Principal Financial Group, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Allstate Insurance and the University of Missouri-Columbia, to name a few. The luncheon was hosted by GBC, so naturally binding was an important topic. Attendees agreed with data from a GBC survey of in-plants that showed growth in coil binding, mostly due to customer requests. Automated binding was also a key

Strong In-plant Involvement at On Demand Show

On Tuesday, more than two dozen of them gathered for the In-Plant Graphics luncheon/roundtable discussion, sponsored by GBC. They talked about some of their equipment acquisition plans as well as new services they have added. Several that have started offering fulfillment services described how this has helped strengthen their in-plants. On Wednesday, in-plant managers shared their strategies and success stories at some of the educational sessions. Steven Dimond,
