Mark Dixon, Former Oregon Director, Passes Away
Mark Dixon, former director of the University of Oregon's Printing and Mailing Services operation, has passed away at 67. He was a longtime attendee of the Association of College and University Printers conference until he retired in June of 2016.
A towering presence, Mark stood a good foot taller than most of his peers, yet his friendly, outgoing nature always put others at ease. He worked in production for 16 years at Oregon State University (OSU) Printing and Mailing Services, before moving to the University of Oregon in 1992. He became director of University of Oregon Printing and Mailing Services in December 2009, where he put a renewed focus on customer service and took steps to bring digital technology into that heavy offset operation.
Even after retiring, he was happy to help out his in-plant peers. In 2018, he joined other retired alumni of OSU Printing and Mailing Services, Cheryl Lyons and Jean-Luc Devis, to offer advice to the current in-plant team. In that meeting, he stressed the importance of communication, saying: “Don’t communicate with coworkers so that they understand; communicate with them so they cannot misunderstand.”
“Mark was a strong, wise, ethically driven, competent in-plant leader,” reflects Devis. “I admired his skills and appreciated his friendship.”
"Mark was a great guy who elevated the University of Oregon print shop during his time," adds Mike Loyd, IPMA executive director. "We both loved college baseball as he was a big Oregon State fan. He was an avid fisherman who always had a smile on his face and was kind and generous. I will miss him a lot."
"Mark was always helpful," recalls Judy Bankson, former associate director at OSU's in-plant, who says the two university in-plants often shared resources. "The working relationship between the two universities was one of my fondest memories I had with Mark and his crew. He was truly kind with a great sense of humor. I always enjoyed talking with him at his shop and at conferences. He will missed by all who knew him."
I visited Mark to tour the University of Oregon's Printing and Mailing Services operation many years ago and made this video, in which Mark has a few cameos. Seeing him always put me in a good mood, and I join the rest of his in-plant peers in mourning his loss.
