PRINTING United Expo is a wide-format wonderland. From roll-to-roll poster printers to flatbeds as big as trucks, wide-format printers abounded in Orlando, grabbing the attention of every passerby with their colorful output.
For in-plants, wide-format printing offers endless opportunities to increase their value.
“Their organization is using wide-format throughout. It's a growing print need, a growing opportunity to them to help serve their organization,” says Canon’s Bob Barbera. “Universities are looking for a lot of signage. They're looking for banners that they can hang in different parts of the campuses. And that can also be true for school districts. We're starting to see some in-plants in the public sector want to look at wide-format, specifically like a Canon Arizona, that can actually build up height and print for Braille purposes.”
“The world's becoming more competitive. You've got to do things to get your product in front of your competitors. And so bigger print, bigger signage, things that create value for your company … are the things we're focused on,” says Xante’s Robert Ross. “You've got to do things that may put you in front of your competition. So bigger, bolder things to get your customers’ attention”
Those with older wide-format devices may want to check out the newest generation of equipment at the Expo, points out Fuji’s Michael Poulin, such as the new Acuity TR roll-fed printer equipped with Fujifilm’s AQUAFUZE water-based UV ink.
“It's UV curable but it's water based, so that's really where the secret sauce is,” he says. “Fuji developed a way to suspend a UV molecule in the water. And … we evaporate the water, leave the ink behind, and then hit that with the UV lamp to solidify it.”
He suggests in-plants checking out wide-format equipment at the Expo ask each vendor, “what can I do with this type of technology, and what are the limitations if I go with your technology?”
