When your printer has to stop and cool down after printing just 99 pages, it can be tough to keep your productivity high. That’s what the Copy Center at the University of Houston-Clear Lake faced with its previous printer.
“It would also not run different types of stock, and we had a lot of jobs that needed to go on a variety of paper,” explains Dmitri Melendez, Print Shop technician and Copy Center assistant.
So the three-employee in-plant recently replaced that indolent printer with a new Océ CS550. Among other benefits, it can run a variety of stock instead of being limited to just bond.
“One [of our requirements] was that the copier that we got had to match our school colors, PMS 354 and 307,” Melendez says. “The Océ does just that, and very well. Although still in its infancy, we believe that the Océ will be a major contributor to the growth of the Copy Center and eventually to the Print Shop as well.”
Since it was installed, the new Océ CS550, has produced postcards, eight- to 12-page booklets, 11x17˝ posters, brochures, flyers, cookbooks, newsletters, labels, bookmarks, student projects and business cards.
The Copy Center’s customers include professors, students and faculty, but the in-plant does not handle jobs strictly for the Houston, Texas, college. It also does “walk-up” work for employees and students that is not university-related.
The deciding factor to go with the CS550 was cost, Melendez says. And the fact that unlimited toner would come with its monthly rental was just the cherry on top. Melendez says that the in-plant was also pleased with the amount of information Océ provided, and is confident that the CS550 will accommodate future growth.
“We believe that when the time comes to add the variable data info to jobs we will be ready to handle it with our new Océ CS550,” he declares.
