PITTSBURGH—June 13, 2007—Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF), the world’s largest graphic arts trade association, has announced the appointment of graphic arts industry veteran Eric Neumann as research manager in the organization’s research department. In his new role, Neumann will be responsible for managing the various research efforts and projects the organization performs for its customers, including product development and on-press testing, as well as marketing those services to others in the industry. “Eric’s addition to our team emphasizes the rigor with which we do our research and testing and highlights our department’s high level of professionalism and expertise,” says Dr. Mark Bohan, vice

Through a digital workflow utilizing JDF (Job Definition Format), combined with the use of print finishing machines equipped with AMRYS (Automatic Make-Ready System), makereadies can be completed 75% faster on saddle stitchers and 90% faster on cutters. These are among the findings in research conducted by PIA/GATF, underscoring the ability of automation to enhance profitability by shortening set-up times, speeding job changeovers, lowering labor costs and reducing expensive mistakes. PIA/GATF will lead a workshop offering proven information about how print production operations can take advantage of JDF-enabled workflow. The workshop, entitled “Implementing a JDF Workflow,” will take place September 28-29, in Pittsburgh.

JDF-enabled workflows can significantly improve makeready in the bindery, according to research performed by the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF). The findings include: * 75% faster makeready on stitchers. * 90% faster makeready on cutters. “The promise of this technology to assist printers to greater productivity will enable those using JDF to be more competitive and more profitable,” remarks PIA/GATF Chief Operating Officer George Ryan. Leading the research efforts on JDF is Dr. Mark Bohan, PIA/GATF’s director of research and integrated technology. Dr. Bohan will also lead a two-day workshop in September discussing precisely what needs to be done to take advantage of JDF. The session
